What is the W3C and what it stands for Web Design?

Take a quick browse across the internet and you\’d be forgiven for thinking that anything goes. Today there are hundreds of weird and wonderful websites out there. Some are just asking to be called crazy, such as sendinsults.com, omnomnomnom.com or verygross.com, but some are beautiful or incredibly inspiring and luckily the majority tend to at least be functional.
When browsing the internet you are likely to come across all sorts of web design styles, ranging from the simple template to the highly customised page and everything in between, so it may be a surprise to find out that a governing body, the W3C, actually attempts to control certain aspects of web design and development.
The World Wide Web Consortium, or the W3C as it quickly came to be known, was established in 1994 after the first big internet boom. The W3C, a body made up of the top movers and shakers of the IT world, continues to be in charge of governing and controlling the internet and the web design standards that it adopts. The initial rules set out by the W3C identified HTML as the primary coding language to be used in websites and outlawed the ownership of web design codes by individual companies.
Revisions of the original standards set out by the W3C continue to be active today, providing standard international guidelines for web design that enable search engines and browsers to display and index web pages in an efficient, uniform manner. For example, when the W3C released html version five, it had been modified to reflect shifts in web development in order to include a range of coding tools that are necessary for the creation of web applications as well as those generally useful for the design of web pages.
The standards set out by the W3C are important to understand before beginning any web design project because, unless the website is designed according to these guidelines, it may not be compatible with all browsers and platforms and risks frustrating site visitors. If the standards outlined by the W3C are followed, you are more likely to end up with a popular website that attracts a diverse range of local and international customers. Another reason that W3C guidelines are important is that the languages recommended by them (such as html) do not involve unnecessary coding. This means that if your site is unfortunately targeted by a virus or hacker, troubleshooting will be easier as there is a universal code to follow.
All quality web design companies should follow W3C standards as a matter of course, so if you are in the market for a new website, make sure you confirm the W3C adherence of your web designer to avoid future setbacks and expenses.
